Mental health and depression

Mental Health Monday’s #3

Are you depressed?

Low mood, guilt ridden and not motivated? These are some of the signs of depression. Depression is a condition where you feel sadness over a long period. People suffer with low moods sometimes; this can be normal. It’s only when it takes over your life or you are finding it difficult to cope you need help. People need to recognise when they are depressed and when they need support.

Did you know the world health organisation found depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/depression Depression is more prevalent in women in comparison to men. Is this because men struggle to speak about how they feel?....

How to deal with depression?

Coping mechanisms:

1. Socialise – keep in touch with your family and friends. Remember you’re not alone people want to help don’t be afraid to tell them how you feel.

2. Exercise – studies have shown exercising can help with depression. Don’t worry if you’re not a gym freak. Start off small, walk for 20 minutes a day and build up routine.

3. Fears – people with depression often lose confidence when at work or when talking to people. Start by writing down what you’re afraid of and think about how you can overcome it to make is easier for yourself.

4. Maintain a balanced diet and avoid alcohol – when people are depressed appetite is normally reduced leading them to being underweight. This will contribute to depression by making induvial feel lethargic, unmotivated and not have the energy to do normal activities. Alcohol is used to disguise emotions. Alcohol isn’t the answer to help with your depression it will only make it worse!

5. Get medical advice – if you feel your unable to cope or you need some help contact your GP who can advise you of local helplines or give you medication to help.
